Choosing the Right Ply for Your Corrugated Box

3-ply, 5-ply or 7-ply? A practical guide to matching box strength with what you're actually shipping.

One of the first questions we get from new customers is simple: which ply should I choose? The honest answer is that it depends on weight, distance, and how the box will be handled along the way. Here's how we think about it at Nepal Printing Works.

What ply actually means

Ply refers to the number of paper layers glued together to form the board. More layers means more strength, more stacking capacity, and more protection — but also more material and more cost. Choosing well is about right-sizing, not over-engineering.

A quick guide by use case

3-ply — light and everyday

Best for lightweight goods, inner packaging, garments, stationery and short local trips. Cost-effective and easy to fold, seal and print on.

5-ply — the workhorse

Our most popular option. Suits e-commerce shipments, FMCG cartons and medium-weight goods travelling across districts. Good balance of strength and price.

7-ply — heavy duty

Reserved for heavier loads, long-haul freight, export packaging and stacking on pallets. Handles rough handling much better than lighter boards.

Questions we'll ask you

  • How much does the product weigh, packed?
  • How far is it travelling, and by what mode?
  • Will boxes be stacked on top of each other?
  • Is the box the outer shipper, or an inner carton?

Answer those four questions and we'll recommend the right ply — usually the lightest one that will do the job safely.
